by Alysa Marie

Talla was still hungry so she took a bite of her nectarine. It was the most delicious nectarine she had ever had, not at all sour and perfectly juicy. As she bit into it she liked the slight crisp sound and then slurped the juice.
"Crow, or sorry, Dark Hawk!" She called down to the crow flying overhead. "How is this fruit so perfect? I don't think I spotted one fruit with blemish or rotting back in the orchard, how is that possible?"

"Sweet girl. You are no longer in the cursed world. This here is Abbala. God has ordained things here. There is a problem though."
"What do you mean a problem? Is it because I'm here?"
"No. Quite the opposite actually. Because there is a problem, you have finally arrived."
"I don't understand."
"Come with me." The crow, Dark Hawk, stopped again on the fence post and then flew to lead her through the lush trees and down atop a hill. The hill was full of dying weeds and brush nothing like the beautiful plants and flowers or fruit trees she had seen.
"Whoa, why does it look like this on this side of the path and not the other?"
"This is supposed to be a scared place. It has been cracked. A crack created by the spirit realm."
"Is that how I got here?"
"Ahh cawah. Not at all. That is why you came here. You were meant to come to Abbala."
"I don't know anything about Abbala. I'm a girl from California not the spirit world."
"No, you are not from the spirit world. That world I speak of is a dark world. It is my job as a guardian, your appointed guardian to protect you and where you would enter. Now that you have entered, well... I know that the time has come."
"Explain the time to me, what time is this?"
"I will show you." Dark Hawk exclaimed matter of factly and lifted carefully with his beak a straw mat from the ground. This mat had another, and another mat underneath it, Dark Hawk pulled them up with his feet and claws and moved them aside.
There was a small opening, maybe 24 inches wide. Dark Hawk hoped down onto a step inside.
"Follow me, Talla."
"Wait, how do you know my name, I haven't told you my name."
"Please trust me, I am your guardian, I just- know things. The space gets bigger don't worry. Caww come now and recover the opening."
Talla started to squeeze through the hole in the ground, feeling anxious. She pulled herself back out and sat on the edge of the opening. Her hands began to feel tingly.
"I don't think I can go in there, I don't like being underground like that, no windows, no air. I can't breathe down there. I-I'm sorry, I just can't."
"It is normal to feel nervous. What choice do you have? You are here for a reason to follow at this time."
Dark Hawk spoke with hidden meanings in his word and Talla understood. He was her guardian, she believed that  following him was going to led her to her purpose in this place of beauty and she didn't know what else yet...

"Okay, I'm ready now, I want to know why I have come to this place."
"You can do this. Let me light the way." Dark Hawk hopped down more steps and the room widened the deeper he hopped. He picked up a branch and scratched it on a sort of pocket in a dirt wall and the branch lit up. He used the branch to light a large candle hanging on the wall, and another on the other side of the wall.
"Cover the opening."
Talla covered the opening with the mats and crouched down to walk down the steps. It was now light underground from the glowing candles. Dark Hawk hopped on one foot and lit two more candles on the steps, and two more in a room.
"Wow. There are mirrors everywhere in here, even colored ones. It looks like I am inside a Christmas ornament or something." Talla giggled. "It really is beautiful."
"Thank you. I did not make this room. I don't know who made this room, this is the room where we hold the written word. The word that made this world."
"That made Abbala?"
"Yes. We believe, the other animals and I here, that this room is a type of sacred tomb, though not for the dead, for protection, these mirrors of colors and light protect this word from destruction, so we can exist separate from evil spirits."
"Evil spirits?" Talla remembered now, as if a flash in front of her eyes, the shadow that surrounded her at home, on the path. "Is that why I saw a shadow spirit?" Talla asked Dark Hawk.
"When did you see a shadow spirit?"

"Before I came here."
"They must have known you were coming somehow."
"How would they know, if I just got here, I haven't seen any "evil" thing."
"I must look for this book now, it tells all prophecy, from beginning to the end of Abbala and to eternity it begins again at the end of the book. At the end of the book, the end of this prophecy a new book will be written. But if the spirit world found this scared tomb..."
"What? Where is the book then?" Talla felt anxious all over again, feeling claustrophobic and wanting to get out.
"There is a shielded entrapment here in the center, we must dig."
Talla began to dig with her bare hands, and the crow dug with his feet, kicking dirt behind him.
"It is not deep. Caww, we should hurry."
They dug quickly, till Talla felt a strange pulling force on her hands.
"I feel something." Talla said excitedly.
"The shield. Good. Step back."
Dark Hawk flew to the top mirrors, tapping with his beak twice each the red and green ones, a regular mirror once and again the red and green mirrors. A light burst through the hole they dug and sure enough a circular shield of blue light pushed upwards to the dirt and the light stopped shining. The blue shield seemed to crack itself open.

Continued from Part 7... "The Angelic Woman" Part 8

The coffee cup clanked down onto the small dish which had sprinkled remnants of sugar grains on it. Mary-Lynn always loved a lot of sugar in her coffee and a lot of half and half too. On occasion, she would add a sprinkle of cinnamon or a drizzle of chocolate syrup. This morning she preferred to mix in just sugar and half and half.

Talla's father had already left for work early and Mary-Lynn tried her best to enjoy a brisk walk in the crisp cool hours of morning, before it got too hot. By the time she got near Joanna's (a little corner coffee shop off a main road) she just felt the need to sit for awhile. Young mom's picked out pastries for their whiny children. Busy, office-ready dressed, hurried people ordered their espressos and muffins, pouring the sugar everywhere it seemed and racing out the door the moment their coffee was ready. Mary-Lynn just sipped her coffee slowly. Seeing the young faces of the women there, made her think of Talla, wishing she had just stayed and gotten a place closer to home- not the other side of the country!

Frustrating, she thought, and she hasn't bothered to call me since she got there. I need to just send her a letter I guess.

Knowing she ought to give her a chance to figure things out on her own, she didn't want to call and pester her, writing sounded like a good idea. She could mail her a photo of them all together. Mary-Lynn perked up about that idea and started off out the door of the coffee shop. This time feeling a little more cheery she jogged herself home to write Talla.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Cawww cawww ahh, You walk slow. If only you had wings like mine, I wouldn't have to fly and stop. Fly and stop."

With a frown and a little tired attitude Talla responded, "Well, I'm sorry crow. I don't even know why I am following you in the first place, or why I am even talking to you, or how that is possible? And now I am supposed to have wings?"

"No need to be sassy. I suppose I can fly ahead and wait on the fence post till you catch up."

"Thank you," Talla chuckled, "So, do you have a name?"

"Dark Hawk." The crow answered. "Before you say another word, the other guys, crows I mean, thought it was appropriate for me since it is my duty to guard the opening since the day you would come."

"You knew I was coming here?"

"Yes, for many, many long years I flew by here day and night. Checking for your arrival. It's my purpose. I watch as a hawk. Thus the name. I am not afraid of danger; I am a guardian."

"Who do you guard?"

"You."

"Please. How could you have waited for me all these years when I just showed up here this morning, or last night. I don't know. Actually I don't even know how I got here for sure. And now you are my guardian. How do you know I am the one to guard I'm not old or an angel. So..."

"I have not seen another being like you. I am a creature that is unique here, there are not many of us with multi-communication abilities. I can sense your language and speak it, just as I know the bird language and can speak to other animals with understanding. I can speak to the forbidden spirits that dwell here. I am created for a purpose."

"I suppose that sorta makes sense."

"You are created for a purpose. That's why you are here."

"I'm still trying to figure out where here is."

Talla continued walking down the pathway. It was actually quite beautiful really. Trees, bushes with little dark pink flowers. She could also hear the quiet chirps of other birds above her in the branches.

"Um. Dark Hawk, I'm sorry but, being human and all I am very hungry and I actually really need to find a bathroom. Do you know of anything like that?"

"Of course, I will fly ahead and wait, then I will show you where the fruit trees are just a little off the path."

"Okay. Lovely." Talla smirked at the crow and found a hidden bush area to go hide behind it a moment. "Why would there be a bathroom here? In a land of talking crows." She whispered to herself.

Talla walked down toward the crow and he led her pointing with his wing off the dirt path to a little orchard. It was actually very beautiful. Lemon trees grouped together, and also grouped nearby were nectarine trees, apple trees, and pear trees. Talla was thirsty so she choose the pear tree and also picked one from each of the other trees fitting a lemon and apple in each jacket pocket and holding the nectarine. The pear was perfectly sweet and juicy and very thirst quenching. She hadn't realized till that moment how thirsty she really was.

Continued from Part 6... "The Angelic Woman" Part 7

The sounds of birds chirping echoes nearby as Talla's eyes slowly open. Forgetting where she was, she turned to lie on her side but instead rolled directly out of the tree down to the ground. Fortunately, with her hands out in front of her she braced herself for a startled but safe landing onto the dirt.

"What a way to wake up. Thank you God. I dreamt. That's it. It was a dream." Talla smiled.

Now that she slept it would be easy to get home in the daytime. She stood up and brushed the dirt off of her pants and dropped the pebbles out of each shoe. Once she put her shoes back on she looked up and noticed a crow circling round about above her.

Frustrated she declared to the crow, "What? Do you think I'm dying or something? Get on!" Crows are hardly what you would call vultures, but they are scavengers none the less. "Where is that pathway?" She whispered to herself.

It was overcast, no blue sky to be seen overhead. Just 15 feet in front of her Talla could see a hill with a white fence lining a trail. She wondered if that was the path home. She walked over to the hill and began walking up the dirt pathway. She again saw the crow which had followed her again. Flying round about the crow then landed in a tree branch above her.

"Pestering crow! What do you want?" Talla called out to it as it cawed down to her.

"Nothing. You are going the wrong way."

"How would you know? You're just a crow."

"I can see from above. You lost down below."

Are you kidding me lord? Am I awake or asleep? "How are you talking to me? That's impossible."

"It's not impossible here, where I am from. Who are you, are you the holy host to guard us from the vile wicked rulers? Or are you the foretold girl of old?"

"I'm no angel if that's what you meant, and I'm definitely not old." She felt insulted and confused as she gazed up to the crow in amazement, but mostly shock.

"Well then, how are you here?"

"Um. I drove here in my car and I also walked more than I have in years. I have to say, this is hardly how I expected Monaloe, Delaware to be."

"Caww? Where is that?"

"Come on! That's where we are."

The crow cawed as he floated down to the white post fence feeling less threatened and curious about this young woman. He tilted his head side to side, examining her face. Her light skin and nice looking face made Talla appear to be of a gentle nature. The crow tried to figure out who she could be. Talla thought similarly about the crow.

How on earth could I be talking to a crow? She thought about it but the outcome to the thought was not reached. She felt more like she were in "The Twilight Zone" thinking instead of the classic old black and white shows she had watched on the television with her parents. She could make no sense in her mind about yesterday till this very moment.

She pondered in thought about the man in the truck yesterday, What was it that man said? Something about not too many good things happen around here? The fork in the road each leading somewhere else and ending up at the lady's house for tea... Tea. That's it. The fork could've been a set up. But why me? Was I really drinking team or--?

"Excuse me crow, where am I?" She decided it was time to be direct and face the fact she may not have been dreaming after all.

"You really don't know? Abbala."

"Abbala?"

"Yes. A land of God's love. More like a battleground for 19 years now since the wicked lair broke through."

"I suppose if I can talk to a crow you must be telling me the truth."

"I am. Caww." The crow pecked his beak at the wood post, sharpening its edges.

"Well, okay then. Which way to Monaloe?"

"I know of no place like you say. If you are no angel. You must be the girl of old. Please you must follow me down this way..." The crow insisted speaking more forwardly to Talla and flew above her again.

Talla unsure of world she was actually in, or if she were asleep or awake, she followed the crow.

What else is there to do? Focus Talla. I can figure this out. But, I am actually following a crow. Oh Mom, if you had any idea what I was up to, you'd trip out and tell me I told you not to move out there.

Talla thought of her parents. Pa was probably at work already reading the plans at the local construction site and Mom would be probably washing last night's dishes and then getting ready for a lunch with her friends like she did every Tuesday for "Taco Tuesdays" in a local Mexican restaurant called, Ricardo's Burgers and Mexican Food down the road from their house. On Tuesdays they sold 2 tacos for $1.50. Talla missed going too as she did on occasion. Actually, Talla was very much wishing she hadn't moved at all. At least not so far from her home town in Newport Beach. Life was busy, sunny and many times carefree. As she continued to walk down the hill after the crow she remembered a youth group meeting she went to, trials build your character.

What kind of character could I possibly develop from this experience? Nothing could have prepared her for this. Whatever, where ever this is.

Continued from Part 5... "The Angelic Woman" Part 6

The gum on her shoe was nothing compared to the rest of her day especially tonight. The road seemed to get steeper even still. The hill seemed comparable to San Francisco streets she walked on during family vacations Talla had as a kid.

I don't remember driving on any steep hill by my house. This can't be right, there was only one fork in the road and I've tried both ways.

Just at that moment while Talla looked around confused, a it seemed to get lighter on the road at the same time, a dark shadow circled around her like a ring around her feet.

"What the heck?" Talla declared with a gasp.

"What are you doing here Tallaaahh? What are you doing here?" A voice screeched from what seemed to come directly from the shadow.

Talla fell to her knees, "Where am I, what do you mean, where are you?" Her heart thumped loudly that she thought it could be heard outside her chest as it pounded in her eardrums. "What are you, where am I?" She asked trying to catch her breath.

The shadow formed a face with a long tail unwrapping itself from around her feet to float in front of her. It was half the size of Talla. Its face looked like a man yet more like a creature.

"Get away from me!" Talla ran back up the hill, panting and started to cry without tears, only moaning quietly in panic.

"I cannot." The shadow creature said. "I follow you, you are in my lair. What are you doing here?"
Talla kept running up the hill, it seemed to go nowhere, as though she were on a treadmill. She ran as far as heart racing heart would let her collapsing to the ground as the shadow creature followed.

"What darkness lies in you? Tallahhh. Tallah. Why are you here, you are not dead?"

"Dead!?" I have no idea if I am even awake. I can't be awake.

Talla pinched her arm like she'd seen in movies to wake herself.

Ouch.

That didn't work, and she could feel it just fine.

"I woke up after falling asleep on the road, I was tired. I haven't done anything, I'm trying to get home, and I have no idea what you are, or why I'm talking to you. Go away from me!" Talla's words raced from her mouth.

She turned and ran off the road into the woods, the trees felt safer even if there were wild animals in there.

I'll take my chances with the animals, not this thing. God help me, where are you? Where am I? Jesus!

The shadow vanished. Talla did not see the shadow creature vanish, she ran so fast through the trees and knee length brush. She was lucky not to trip on a rabbit or snake hole in the ground.

I'm nowhere near home am I? Oh God.

She stopped at a large tree, it was so dark, she could hardly see but only what was right in front of her. The tree felt like a comfort to her and she leaned against its bark trying to catch her breath. She climbed up a couple of the main lower limbs. The branch she sat herself on was wide enough that she could curl her legs on it and lean against the tree. She let out a sigh and closed her eyes, feeling tired and thought maybe if she slept again, she would wake up and be okay. Maybe she is still asleep on that road.

That's it, I am sleeping on that road still. I've been so tired from all the stress and walking. Just sleep now Talla and wake yourself up.

She kept her eyes closed and felt they weight of her lids become heavy. A few minutes later again Talla slept.

Mary-Lynn joined her arm with her husband Rami's arm and they walked out of the theater together.

"That was nice just you and I going out together. I'm happy we picked my movie choice, The Ballet in the Bronx and you wanted to see Loch Ness." She laughed at Rami.

"I have to admit it was definitely interesting and the twist at the end, that girl decided to stay living in that poor neighborhood even after she made it to fame just to help the kids there. It was for sure a chick flick!" Rami laughed back and kissed her cheek, "Seriously though Mary, how could you stand it after the first minute? No no, I'm kidding. It was a good movie sweetheart."

"You really know how to push my buttons don't you honey? I love you."

"Love you too."

They always knew how to poke fun at each other without truly hurting each others' feelings. It was a cold night out so they rushed back to their car and went straight home. Mary-Lynn couldn't help going straight to the den to see if the answering machine was flashing its little red light. Rami saw her in the den.

"Mary, I told you not to worry about it. Talla will call us when she's ready. She's trying to adjust to being on her own, we need to respect that."

"Your probably right, it's just that, well. Nevermind, it's probably just an empty nest syndrome or something."

The heaviness of Talla's sleep was like a load of bricks piled on top of her. She still lay on the road. A loud scream suddenly woke her. She jumped to her feet immediately after hearing the sound. She saw no one though.

I must have fallen asleep. How'd I fall asleep while I was walking.. oh nevermind I'm going to get out of here and tomorrow I am having my car towed, I just need to call from home if my phone gets reception.

Talla checks her pockets feeling nothing in them, not even her keys or gum. Wondering what was going on and could everything have fallen from her pockets?

Wait my phone? Darn, it's in the car. Forget it I'll figure it out tomorrow it is way to dark here. Where's my flashlight?

She pats the ground around her, as it is darker now carefully feeling around for the flashlight on the ground.

Is this like the worst night of my life or what? Does everyone go through this when they leave home? Mom and Pa would be proud of me for toughening up. Mom always said that I needed to. But Lord why tonight, I am tired and it's just too much. Forget the flashlight, maybe I can find it tomorrow and if not buy a new one for that lady.

Talla started walking down the road that began to get steeper.

I don't remember this street being on a slop like this. Or a moon that was full and now, it must be an eclipse? Oh well for the hundredth time today.

She walked slowly down the road thinking mostly of her parents and hoped that she was missed...

Continued from Part 3... "The Angelic Woman" Part 4
Talla continued walking up the dirt pathway. Her legs aching slightly now as she neared the top of the hill. She knew now she needed to go left at the fork in the road, that road was paved and she wondered why she even thought to go down this dirt hill anyway. She felt a little safer now as the light of the flashlight gleamed in front of her. It was a large flashlight so it shone fairly bright.
She felt a little woozy thinking it must be because she is not used to walking. It was probably only a little after 8 o'clock. Her favorite T.V. show was just about to start she thought. A comedy about college friends in New York. She realized she was so used to city life that this switch to rural living was completely out of her everyday ordinary that she wondered again why she choose to go out to the middle of nowhere.
A quiet noise seemed to come from the bushes along side of the road.

"What is that?" Talla spoke to herself quietly.

It sounded like a quiet voice with a slight screech. Talla turned her flashlight to her right side, aiming light on the dry bushes that looked more like brush of overgrown plants and flowers. She saw nothing out of the ordinary so she kept walking. She could not tell if it was her nerves acting out anxiously but she felt as if she were dizzy, more like a slight vertigo. She knew her house should only be down the hill in front of her, maybe 10 minutes away.

I must be overtired, if I can just get through this... "Whoa!" Talla's heart nearly jumped up into her throat. She saw a black shadow move in front of the light path as she took a step forward. She began to jog and than ran.

This is too much, I must be tripping. I don't care I am not walking at night like this again. Talla thought to herself as she slowed down and walked quickly. Her heart was still racing she wondered why so fast. Her eyelids felt heavy, then heavier, then...

Talla fell. She did not trip or bump any rock this time. Only, she fell straight onto the ground. Her knees buckled beneath her and her body rolled onto it's side with her cheek falling next hitting the ground.

A shadow emerged and engulfed her body on the ground. Footsteps neared her as she laid, her flashlight gleaming down the hill in front of her.

Back in California, her mother and father lived a nice life in a over-sized five bedroom house. They felt proud that their 19 year old daughter had chosen to try a new life on her own without their help and direction. Her mother worried still though.

"Honey, it's been five days and we only heard from Talla when she got to the house two days ago." Talla's mom, Mary-Lynn declared to her husband Rami.

"We have to give her a chance to grow Mary. We can't be calling her everyday, just because she moved out of state or out of the house for that matter."

"I know your right. I'm going to go start some dinner," Mary-Lynn gave her husband a hug and walked into the kitchen. "It is nice that we have time to ourselves. Rami, do you want to go out after dinner?" She called out from behind the refrigerator door.
"Sure baby. That sounds good. I'd like to see that new movie, Loch Ness."
"Loch Ness? No. How bout a drama instead?"
"Okay." Rami laughed.

Talla's body lie still, her breath slow and her heart still racing. She was asleep, against her will, her body would not move. She could feel within herself a spinning sensation. The light of the flashlight turned off.

Her steps crinkled the leaves with each step as the paved road turned to a dirt road with pebbles and dried leaves scattered about. The fear she was feeling turned to hope as she neared the small house. Its light gleamed through the front shaded window which had its curtain drawn. Talla walked up the path that led to the front door. She knocked looking around, waited briefly and knocked again. She heard the noise of a door slamming shut, it sounded though it could be a back door. She knocked again and the sound of footsteps came up to the door.

"Who is it?" A woman asked in a harsh tone.

"Hi, I'm Talla, I live nearby, wondered if you might be able to help me?" Talla asked loudly so the woman would hear through the door.

A woman with blonde hair and a slightly haggard appearance opened the door. "Are you alone?"

"Yes."

"Come on in, sure I can help you, what do you need?"

"Well my car broke down a mile or so from here and I was just headed home, and being that it's dark I went down the wrong road and I'm a little turned around."

"Ok. Sit down and I will see if I can help you. Have some tea first?"

"Yeah, thanks I'm thirsty from walking. What's your name by the way?"

"Oh, my manners. I'm Verdella. So, do you have family here?"

"No, I'm from California actually," Talla replied, "I just moved out here recently, that's why I don't know where I am." She laughed slightly, realizing how ditzy she must seem.

"Dear, that's too bad, here have some tea to warm your spirit up a moment."

"Is it Peppermint tea? Smells good." Talla took a few sips and was feeling really tired. "I'm not used to walking much, I walked so far. I really need to get some help with my car tomorrow."

"It's down the road, huh?"

"Yeah, a Ford Mustang. I think driving it out here wore it out, it overheated, it may just need some coolant, but there were no stores close by to where I was, only a liquor store."

Talla sipped her tea a little more.

"Yes, it is best if you have a car out this way. I wish I could help you more, I don't have a car myself. My cousin brings me what I need so I don't have to go out."

Talla takes another sip of tea, places the cup down on the end table and stands up from the couch.

"Well, I guess I should be going then, you wouldn't happen to have a flash light I could borrow? I'd give it back to you tomorrow."

"I do, yes." Verdella gets her flashlight out of a hall closet and hands it to Talla as she is walking towards the door. "I'm glad I could help a little, sorry I don't have a car to help you home."

"No, it's okay. Thanks for the flash light, it's difficult to know where I'm going with no street lights."

"Bye, Talla. It was nice to meet you dear."

"Thanks, I'll get the flashlight back to you tomorrow." Talla exclaimed as she started down the path and switched on the light.

She walked up the hill to the main road.

Continued from Part 1... "The Angelic Woman" Part 2

Talla knew that she was close to home. As it was now getting almost pitch black outside besides the light of the moon, that was thankfully almost full. Even under the moonlight, Talla's fear grew. Wild animals lived just on the edges of the road she was walking on. Coyotes, deer, mountain lions, and...?

Okay, what was that noise now? That was not a rat.

Talla turned around fast and walked backwards a moment, then spun around to hurry her steps. She knew at any moment some animal could be curious or hungry enough to investigate her.

A slow jog should hurry me along home. If I remember where in the dark, it's just about a half an hour from here.

By now the night's chill sent shivers down her spine and goosebumps on her arms. The pace of her jogging kept her warm though.

"ARRRRROoooooooooouuu rrrrruuuoooo." A distant wolf cried out. Distant enough it did not panic Talla.

That must be a coyote, I've seen enough in Cali, no biggie.

She continued jogging for a few minutes, but then it felt like someone were following her, as if someone were literally looking right over her shoulder. A strange feeling, logically though she heard no breath, no foot steps behind her, so she shouldn't worry about it. Yet, in the darkness the feeling that she was being watched she couldn't shake. Talla stopped jogging and turned around quickly, only to fall suddenly on an unexpected large rock in the road. She cried out a yelp! Her ankle aching now, she sat down next to the rock facing the road opposite the direction of home.

This has to be like the worst night ever. Ah, my ankle.

Fear turned to pouting and she leaned back on the rock and looked up at the moon and stars that covered the clear dark sky. Tears started to well up in her eyes. She seriously thought of just spending the night right there, in the cold, in the dark with wild animals around.

Could I survive, would animals get me?

"Whoa, what was that?"

This time she heard no sound, and only felt that strange feeling as though she weren't alone. Talla witnessed a bright light flash by her a few feet away. The light was almost dim that she just about denied seeing it, until again, it flashed by the other way. She was now definitely terrified.

I've gotta get up and get the heck out of here.

She started to lift herself up leaning on the rock to stand upright. She could walk, she was okay. Her ankle felt as if needles were poking at it and a she could feel a slight throbbing, but she could make it home still. Wiping her eyes and enduring the pain, she walked as fast as her hobble would take her.

I wish there were street lights at least. I would feel a little safer.

All she had with her was a little wallet in her pocket and a pack of chewing gum and keys in the other pocket. She was thankful now that she chose warm clothes, remembering that she complained earlier when it was hot out. It seemed the road was nearing its end. Happily she hoped, but only to find a fork in the end of the path. She thought left was the way to go, but doubted her memory and chose right.

If this is the right way, my house should be down the hill to the left. Thank goodness. I think I actually see it, except wait a minute? Oh, no. That house is white.

Talla's house was an adorable little cabin looking home that was painted a sort of beige and brown.

I better turn around. No, maybe I should knock on their door though and get some help first. Talla started toward the little white house down the hill just a little further...

 THE ANGELIC WOMAN

PART 1

I got gum on my shoe again? It happened the first day I got to this town. What is it with this place and gum? That's it, this is the last time I am wearing these old flats. A hole is starting to show through the toe part anyway. Ugh, it's hot today. Of course, I chose a long sleeved top and pants. Random thoughts. I must be bored. Note to self, bring my iPod next time my car breaks down on the side of the road.

It's gotta be one mile by now. A dreadful walk, hills on both sides, if only I could just walk over the hill it might be faster than the stretch of road mapped out in front of me. I should've stopped at that liquor store back there for a water bottle. Why do I always think of things too late?

The sound of a loud pickup truck nears Talla. A man pulled over just past her, as she walked by he leaned to roll down the passenger window.

"Hi, thought you might need some help darlin'. It's getting late for a young lady to be walking out here alone."

He looks like an old country guy. I do need help. Nothing but road in front or in back of me. But from a stranger? Definitely a strange looking man.

"No, no. Taking a walk for a little ways is all. I'm fine thanks anyway."

"Suit yourself. But it's almost 7:00pm it's about to get dark, I don't hear too many good stories out this way. You from around here?"

"No, not from this area. Monaloe's not too far from here though right?"

"Well, through the woods and hills" the man points left over his shoulder, "I'd say half hour. On this road though, it loops around, it's probably about an hour."

"Okay, thanks."

"Good luck to ya."

Well, I guess he didn't seem to strange after all. But still, I guess I made the safer choice, getting in a car alone with no one around, bad idea. So okay, just probably another mile.

God, I am tired and thirsty. At least it's cooling off, but it would be great if you'd carry me the rest of the way, kinda creepy alone out here. Keep on going, keep on going. Talla prayed; she is not used to walking long distances or short distances either.

Her '65 Ford Mustang with sparkling red paint, was left with it's hazard lights bleeping on and off after overheating. Her treasured car was well cared for when she had the help of her parents back home in Southern California. Now she is on her own. College wasn't on her list of to do. With money saved a little barely known town called Monaloe in Delaware seemed like a small nice affordable place to start. She'd only been here a few days after driving her Mustang out from California. What she wanted was to find a little part-time job and a change of scenery. So now, here she is.

As Talla walks with a consistent pace she can't help but notice that the sunset behind her looks radiantly orange with gleaming light rays through the trees onto the path in front of her. So many gorgeous trees on both sides of the street each with fresh green leaves.  One would think this was an undiscovered beauty like a natural hideaway if it weren't for the paved street.

Not a single car going by for a half hour now.  Well, I should be near the town soon. I am seriously trashing these shoes, my feet will hate me tomorrow.

"Ah, huh?" Talla gasped. What was that? Now it's about dark and I think I just heard a rustling in the bushes back there. I need a rock. I can throw a rock if I have to. It was just a little noise, maybe it was a coyote, or a bunny. Or a rat!?  Eww.

Talla hurries her steps and starts to jog down the stretch of road as it curves down  a hill.

I had to pick a remote town in Delaware all the way across the US? Not even sure why I did. It's the internet's fault. One search and a home with a gorgeous view. Of course I wanted a new and secluded area. Tired of busy cities, but now I wonder what the heck was I thinking? Who ever said change was easy? No one should say it anyway. I am walking with no cell service and no car. Good choice Talla.

To be continued...
